In the mid to late 70s, Eric Clapton's favorite acoustic guitar for performances or recordings was the 1974 Martin 000-28. You can see this guitar in many of the photos and video clips of the time, including the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test and the Eric Clapton and His Rolling Hotel documentary.
Clapton also used this guitar to create many great pieces, such as "Wonderful Tonight." Although Martin's first Eric Clapton signature guitar is 000-42. In addition to limited production, the Martin 000-28EC “Crossroads” guitar has several significant differences from the popular Martin 000-28EC Eric Clapton guitar.
The "Crossroads" guitar includes several exclusive configurations, including Madagascar rosewood back and sides (instead of Indian rosewood), Style 42 snowflake fret marks (not diamonds and squares) and mother-of-pearl crossroads headstock symbolic sign. Like other Eric Clapton signature Martin guitar, this 000-28EC "Crossroads" also inlaid Clapton's signature between the fingerboard 19 and 20 fret. The guitar also includes an internal tag and a certificate signed by Clapton and Chris Martin IV to prove authenticity.
Martin 000-28EC Eric Clapton is one of Martin's classic master signature guitars. Martin's Vintage series is also a nostalgic vintage version, which is the traditional craftsmanship before World War II. Its popularity stems from the better construction & design features that Martin began to employ in the 1930s, including:
Scalloped, forward shifted bracing
Compound dovetail neck joints
Slightly larger necks
The thicker and wider neck provided more structural stability while also increasing the guitar’s sustain and brightness. The neck may be the biggest difference between a Martin 000 and a Martin OM. As a result, the Martin 000-28EC is cheaper and less fancy than the Martin OM42 we reviewed last week, but the triple-0 sounds just as good if not better than the standard OM. Visually, this model has simple but attractive aesthetic details such as the herringbone inlay.In addition,the beautiful sunburst Sitka spruce top adds a subtle flair to the piece.
